lxrp Opposite was engaged by LXRP to develop a mental health and wellbeing program to support frontline project staff who were engaging with community members involved in a government land purchase scheme. This need had been identified as an area of concern based on past experiences of staff involved in similar projects. Our approach was designed in collaboration with leadership and team members, and based on a review of ‘lessons learned’ from previous similar projects. Early collaboration and co-design ensured that the program structure and delivery effectively addressed team needs, and also provided clear and agreed upon processes (e.g., confidentiality; structure of sessions) from the start. The program involved a series of one-on-one coaching sessions with the team manager and team members, and included topics such as skills training, risk management and emotional processing. Sessions supported staff to effectively perform in a stressful and complex role whilst maintaining emotional and mental wellbeing and maximising potential. Outcome: Staff reported reduced stress, improved team cohesion, better overall wellbeing and the retention of key staff. Opposite was invited to support a second group.
Safe Working Procedure Redevelopment
Metro Trains Melbourne Safe working procedures in rail are often complex and vulnerable to misinterpretation under time pressure. Safe System Mapping and Propagation Tool (Department of Transport – Novice Driver crashes)
Department of Transport The Department of Transport faced a critical challenge in reducing road trauma, particularly among novice drivers. Recognising the complexity of this issue, they sought to implement a 'Safe System' approach, which views road safety as a shared responsibility across multiple system elements rather than solely driver error. This holistic perspective required a deep understanding of interconnected factors and potential interventions. Opposite was engaged to thoroughly map the complete Safe System framework relevant to novice driver crashes. Our methodology involved a detailed analysis to identify both reinforcing and balancing loops within the system, crucial for understanding how different elements influence each other. We conducted a comprehensive desktop review including a literature review, jurisdictional scan, and economic analysis to identify contributing factors to road trauma, including driver maturity, situational contexts, and socio-psychological and motivational factors. We then facilitated a collaborative stakeholder workshop using driver personas and systems mapping to align agency messaging and develop evidence-based engagement strategies. Following this, we developed a sophisticated propagation tool designed to simulate and test various combinations of countermeasures. This tool allowed the Department to explore the potential impacts of different interventions on the system, predicting outcomes and identifying the most effective strategies for improving novice driver safety. This project demonstrates our core capability in analysing and navigating complex socio-technical systems. Outcome: A comprehensive Safe System mapping and a predictive propagation tool, enabling the Department of Transport to identify and test effective countermeasures for reducing novice driver road trauma through data-driven insights.

Norms-in-Action "Choose Your Adventure" Simulation
Hive Innovation Group (VIda Rail) To support consistent ways of working across teams, VIDA Rail required a practical method for translating agreed behavioural norms into day-to-day decisions rather than leaving them as abstract statements. Opposite designed a facilitated "choose your adventure" simulation where groups progressed through realistic workplace scenarios and selected which behavioural norm to apply at key decision points. Each choice triggered discussion, reflection, and comparison of outcomes, reinforcing shared understanding of expectations and trade-offs. Outcome: Behavioural norms were converted into practical decision behaviours, improving consistency, shared understanding, and confidence in applying norms in real work situations.

Ampol NDG Group – Post-Restructure Change Support
AMPOL As part of a recent structural change within the Ampol NDG Group, Opposite was engaged to support transitional activities and provide clear, actionable outputs to help the business reset and realign. This included developing a process manual that clarified roles and responsibilities across end-to-end processes post-restructure, along with a six-month change plan for newly appointed leaders to implement. In parallel, Opposite conducted a cultural assessment and designed a series of strategic activities for a one-day leadership strategy session. These were complemented by an online survey and a targeted set of staff interviews to better understand current cultural dynamics. Insights from this work revealed a need for the group to shift toward a more collaborative culture following the restructure. We also identified differing team challenges, often shaped by the scale of change and the legacy of past cultural blockers, contributing to varying levels of resistance. To support sustained change, Opposite established an ongoing leadership steering committee and worked closely with leaders over several months. This included interactive workshops, targeted group activities, and one-on-one coaching to help each leader address their unique leadership challenges and support their teams through change. Outcome: A detailed, phased change implementation plan for NDG leaders A comprehensive cultural assessment highlighting key enablers and blockers A lifecycle process manual summarising all retail-related project phases—from strategy through to closure or divestment
Compass group
Compass Group engaged Opposite to help improve how key allergy prevention controls were communicated and applied across their large-scale food production sites — including universities, mining camps, and retail venues. We quickly discovered the sheer complexity of managing allergens in these environments. With the number of known allergens on the rise — and the risks of getting it wrong being severe — it was clear the existing systems needed a human-centred rethink. We reviewed current controls through a behavioural lens and identified where errors were likely to creep in. Then we redesigned the tools: clearer posters, practical checklists, and simple visual cues that made it easier for staff to understand what they were dealing with and what to do — especially under pressure. We also developed more intuitive labelling systems and storage zone markers to improve separation and reduce cross-contamination risks at the source. These weren’t just new comms materials. They were behaviourally smart, error-resistant, and grounded in real-world use. Because in food safety, the message has to land — or someone might. Outcome: Simplified, error-reducing communication tools (e.g. posters, checklists) Improved staff understanding and consistency of allergy control practices Enhanced food storage labelling concepts for safer allergen separation
Travel Security - Energy Queensland
Energy Queensland engaged Opposite to review and modernise its travel security procedures and translate these into a practical, interactive toolkit for staff. Our team worked closely with Energy Queensland to redesign travel processes with a focus on real-world usability and risk reduction. We developed a comprehensive travel security toolkit, supported by a series of animated explainer videos. These videos highlight key security considerations for employees, including how to plan travel with safety and information security in mind. For example, the content guides staff to ensure they have a clear itinerary, emergency contacts, and pre-booked transport and accommodation before travelling—minimising their exposure to avoidable hazards. The final toolkit is now used across Energy Queensland as a go-to resource for safer, more secure business travel. Outcome: Updated Travel Security Interactive Manual & suite of animated videos launched to all staff.
"What's Your Bad Habit?" Micro-Learning Animations
Energy Queensland Energy Queensland sought to address specific habitual safety and security behaviours that were resistant to change through traditional training methods. Opposite co-design a series of short, targeted animations focused on defined "bad habits," designed as reinforcement tools rather than standalone courses. The assets were intentionally brief and engaging to support repeated exposure. We also translated these into posters that could be conveniently deployed at various locations across the Queensland geography (regional and rural mostly). Outcome: Scalable behavioural reinforcement that supported sustained attention on specific habits and incremental behaviour change over time.
Co-Design of an Anti-Bullying, Harassment & OVA Animation Series
Australian Hotels Association As part of the WORKwell Mental Health Grant scheme developed by WorkSafe, the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) sought to design and deliver targeted engagement materials to help staff address the risks of occupational violence and aggression in the hospitality sector. Opposite was engaged to lead both the content development and visual design of these communications. Our focus was on simplifying key evidence-based behavioural insights and presenting them in an accessible, engaging format for a diverse workforce. We co-designed through stakeholder consultation a series of short animated videos, each reinforcing practical psychological and behavioural strategies to help staff prevent, de-escalate, and respond to aggressive behaviour in the workplace. All animations were handed over in a format suitable to be deployed across the hospitality industry. Content Development Full module design and storyboarding Co-Design Iterative development with stakeholders Animation Production Multi-module animated series for sector-wide use Opposite designed and delivered a multi-module animated engagement tools and guidance materials, including full content development, storyboarding, iterative co-design with stakeholders, and production of animation assets for sector-wide use. Outcome: Accessible, consistent engagement tools and guidance materials that supported behaviour change and improved safety outcomes and safer workplace interactions across the industry.

North Melbourne Community Centre
Opposite was invited to reimagine how a local community centre could feel safer, calmer, and more welcoming — especially for those who might be vulnerable, distressed, or at risk of conflict. We took a human-centred approach, starting with site visits led by our behavioural and environmental design specialists. Working within the constraints of the existing structure and future budget, we identified key design risks and opportunities to reduce tension, prevent violence, and improve staff wellbeing. From there, we developed a series of concept designs — not just architectural tweaks, but behavioural nudges. We looked at layout, lighting, sightlines, artefacts, and materials that either promote a sense of safety… or unintentionally do the opposite. We also created a detailed diagnostic using a crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) framework. This allowed us to systematically assess and rate each area of the centre, helping the organisation prioritise what to fix first and why. The result? A plan not just for a better space — but for better community outcomes. Outcome: Reduced environmental triggers linked to conflict and aggression Increased sense of safety and calm through space design Prioritised fit-out improvements using a CPTED-based diagnostic
Metro Tunnel Project
Simplified and improved the process for managing HF issues. The project had more than 1,500 open issues that were inherited and by the end of our engagement, we had closed close to 100% of the issues. Converted complex issues log into our automated online, digital tool ‘Easy-U’, which helped reduce administrative errors and noncompliance issues. Provided expert HF support and stakeholder management support during safety audits and compliance reviews where HF passed with minimal comments or actions due to the thorough and organised nature of our work. Provided mentoring and guidance for a team of HF specialists conducting design review work for the project. Prior to our engagement, we were also undertaking independent safety assurance reviews of the project. It was through this collaboration that our client decided to invite us to join their team.
Rail Systems Alliance
Conducted a comprehensive early Human Factors analysis for the Rail Systems Alliance Tender in Melbourne. Key user operational and infrastructure interfaces are mapped and used to understand HF needs. The map can also be used for other teams working on the project to have a comprehensive understanding of user needs from end-to-end and the dynamic interplay between tasks across users, which can generate novel issues that must be addressed by adopting a systems-thinking approach. Detailed understanding of the new high capacity signalling system and the impact on individual users, such as train drivers and controllers. Using a journey map approach, The HF issues are mapped to specific steps in the user lifecycle. Note, the example shown here is one small section of a larger map. The larger map included all other interfaces, including maintenance, train drivers etc. The tender team elected to nominate our journey map as one of the centre piece examples in the major tender submission.
Melbourne Airport Link
Conducted a comprehensive early Human Factors analysis for the Melbourne Airport Link. Developed comprehensive list of HF requirements for MTM’s future operations. Summarised the entire HF requirements and needs of users across an interactive map, using the train journey as a framework. Individuals items on the map can be further explored to extract the specific safety and HF issues related to users, their goals, and potential for error/issues.
New Generation Tram Ergonomic Testing
Developed and administered a comprehensive procedure to describe and guide the mock-up usability testing of the Next Generation Tram (NGT) through human factors and ergonomics. Testing was administered alongside Alstom, recruiting representative end users for the validation of ergonomic design and functionality of the tram. Users included Yarra Trams drivers and representative passengers from various populations. Our work formed part of the activities required for compliance and was structured as a set of guided activities, decomposed into tasks with questions and ratings and users. All procedures were developed and administered on full-scale mockups of the tram cabin and saloon, and were in line with human factors requirements, management plans, design verification matrices and human factors issues registers and logs. Outcome: Evidence-based design validation that strengthened safety, usability, and accessibility, informing downstream operations and training.
Wayfinding concepts for underground stations
Designed new concepts for the underground Metropolitan Stations. The below highlights a few of our concepts that were created by our digital design team to illustrate the recommendations from the report.
Human Factors & Safe Design Training (VR-Enabled)
VicRoads VicRoads required training that enabled participants to identify design-related safety risks without exposing them to live road hazards. Opposite designed and delivered Human Factors and Safe Design training using VR-enabled and video-based simulations created from filmed road environments, supported by guided discussion and application activities. Outcome: Stronger practical capability in recognising design risk and applying Safe System principles through immersive, experience-based learning.
Safety Critical Communications Training + Toolkit Portfolio
Metro Trains Melbourne Metro Trains Melbourne operates a dense metropolitan rail network where safety-critical communication underpins safe working, particularly during possessions, degraded conditions, and non-routine activities. Frontline roles such as safe workers and signallers must coordinate across multiple interfaces, often under time pressure, noise, and incomplete information. In this environment, communication quality is a primary safety control rather than a supporting skill. Opposite designed and delivered Safety Critical Communications training for frontline rail roles, embedding closed-loop communication, confirmation and cross-checking behaviours, clarity under pressure, and structured message discipline using rail-relevant scenarios. Following this initial training delivery, Opposite was engaged to develop a future-focused toolkit portfolio to support sustainment and operationalisation. This included a training planning and tracking dashboard (to support refresher cycles and trend monitoring from safety audits), a refreshed pocket-book emphasising step-by-step communication processes (including degraded conditions), and a train-the-trainer handover model to enable consistent delivery at scale. Outcome: An integrated, staged capability uplift, moving from training delivery to a practical sustainment system that translated safety-critical communication expectations into repeatable behaviours supported by tools, refresh planning, and facilitator consistency.
We believe workplaces should practise what they preach. So when it came time to redesign our own office, we used the same principles we apply with our clients: human-centred, evidence-based, and full of curiosity.
We started by asking our team what they needed — then actually listened. Together, we explored the science of creativity, productivity, and wellbeing, and shaped a space to match. Think: warm tones, lush plants, natural light, and real wooden desks (none of that fake veneer nonsense).
We also created a dedicated coaching room — a calm, private space where members of the public can access our unique blend of career coaching and mental health support. Whether it’s planning your next move or managing your mental health, our sessions are backed by Medicare rebates and a team of registered psychologists who know how to help you move forward.
It’s not your typical office.
But then again, we’re not your typical team.
